Automotive Industry Use Case

Automotive assembly line

Incorporating a total wearable scanning solution can provide valuable savings that add up quickly. An automotive plant can build upwards of 1,000 vehicles a day, with each vehicle requiring approximately 1,000 scans. Every second saved per scan can equal a total savings of 1,000,000 seconds per day, coming out to roughly 12 working days in one business day.

Wearable solutions can also help employees by minimizing the steps to scan and move items. For example, an employee needs to scan a 20-pound brake rotor. Using a scanner terminal, the employee picks up the scanner, scans the item, puts the scanner down, picks the item up, and places it onto a cart or pallet. A ring scanner eliminates the need to pick up and put down the scanner terminal.

Omnichannel Warehouse Use Case

In an omnichannel warehouse, many products can be coming and going. Having to pick up and put down a scanner terminal to pick and stock items can be time-consuming. Using wearable technology, employees can point, scan, and pick items more quickly and efficiently.

Another example is in receiving. Items coming in can be in large boxes on pallets that may need to go to several locations. A quick, hands-free scan and a glance at the host mobile computer on the wrist can have employees moving items without having to pick up and put down other equipment, saving time and energy.

Man scanning a pallet of items

Consumer Products Use Case

From the front of a store to the back, wearable technology is great for consumer product businesses. Backroom complexities can be lowered using all-in-one swappable batteries. One consumer products company went from only using handheld terminals to a completely wearable solution due to the increase in ecommerce and on-demand ordering.

Picking efficiency and productivity improved 15% by removing the unnecessary steps of picking up and putting down scanner terminals. Orders were easily seen and verified on wearable mobile host computer, with the ring scanners leaving hands available for picking items.

Some wearable mobile host computers can incorporate voice picking, where verbal commands are provided through a headset, directing employees to the specific products, which can also reduce employee training time.

Scanners and mobile computers can be bulky, are sometimes tethered to host devices, and require the use of one or both hands to use, requiring employees to put down the devices to fill orders and sort/load products. If the devices are tethered there is no independent power supply, and the cable can get in the way or get twisted up and cause problems. Do you know how that impacts productivity and efficiency?

Randomly buying new barcoding scanning and mobile computer technology doesn’t inherently increase productivity and efficiency.

Why Use Wearable Barcode Technology?

Checking the freezer with a thermometer

Wearable technology is optimal for many industries and can decrease unnecessary errors by up to 39%. Having been around for about 12-15 years, wearable tech started out tethered to help employees manage items that are bulky and heavy without having to pick up and put down barcode scanning devices.

As ecommerce picked up, speed and efficiency became more important to keep up with tasks. Wearable scanners have proven how they increased efficiency in picking when both hands are needed for heavy and bulky items. Why stop there? Micro-efficiencies that were previously dismissed can save time from the extra motions of picking up and putting down a mobile computer, or having to search for where it was last placed.

Benefits of Using a Wearable Barcode Scanning Solution

The rise of ecommerce created the need for more efficient wearable barcode scanning options that could keep up with the demands on businesses while not burdening employees with multiple devices and cords. Wearable barcode solutions provide the ability to safely move heavy and bulky items and quickly perform scanning and picking by keeping both hands free. Gone are the days of having to constantly pick up and put down scanning devices.

Wearable barcode technology has been around since around 2010. Wearable barcode technology was originally created to provide a hands-free option for heavy and bulky lifting. The concept helped to improve work efficiencies while lowering the repetitive motions of picking up and putting down handheld scanners.

Delivery driver using a Zebra tc5x

A laser-based ring scanner was tethered to a terminal due to the inability to power such a small device for a workable duration. Scanning was the sole purpose of the ring scanner, so if other information had to be reviewed or data needed input on the spot, everything had to pause to do so.

As technology has improved, so has the capabilities of wearable barcode device technology. Gone are the days of being tethered to a terminal. Wearable devices have also improved from being bulky and incapable of holding power to being ergonomic, Wi-Fi capable, and battery powered.

The warehouse of the future is already here. Are you outfitting your operations accordingly, or will you risk being left in the dust by more nimble competitors?

Fact is, today’s warehouses and logistic centers desperately need speed and efficiency to perform and compete at a competitive level.

So, what can negatively impact speed in the era of pick/pack/ship lightning turnarounds? Many factors can dramatically influence (and often degrade) the human and technological components of your operation.

warehouse of the future
Consider the warehouse or logistics workforce and their daily roles and responsibilities. The more workers lift heavy items to obtain accurate scans, the higher the safety concerns and repetitive injuries that may occur—nothing like workers being shelved due to injury to wreak havoc with operations and profitability.

Moreover, a worker doesn’t need an injury to become a drag on operations. Current scanning systems can often slow performance and negatively impact the workforce due to ongoing and nagging usage and ergonomic difficulties.

One outcome is abundantly clear when viewed through warehouse performance at all levels: the need for better, faster, accurate, safe scanning of warehouse inventory. That day has arrived …

Fast, Accurate, and Safe Wearable Scanning is Job One (As well as Jobs, Two, Three, and Four)

Checking the freezer with a thermometer
Yes, wearable scanners have become that critical to operational performance and productivity. According to MHI, 70% of warehouses will deploy wearable technology within 12-24 months.

Better technology is essential for efficient operation, order fulfillment, and inventory management.
Warehouse operations and logistic centers have three key problem areas when it comes to their current scanning needs:

Warehouse operations and logistic centers have three key problem areas when it comes to their current scanning needs:

  1. Difficulty scanning: current wearables are not up for the job; scanners often break, causing downtime and being out of service when they are needed most.
  2. Scanning distance: challenges often exist when reading racks, product labels, and pick tickets from the vantage point of fork trucks.
  3. Barcode reading issues: low quality, damaged barcode readings require extra time a warehouse worker simply doesn’t have (and a warehouse operation can’t afford.)

Fortunately, the solution is literally right at your fingertips …

The Honeywell 8675i Wearable Scanner is the Answer

Demanding workflows is where the Honeywell 8675i Wearable Scanner truly shines. Finally, a warehouse or logistic center workforce can uplevel their daily performance and be much more efficient and effective. With its enhanced scanning ability, this wearable scanner is rugged and ready to deliver performance in multi-shift, real-world environments.

Workers will appreciate the superior ergonomics and smaller footprint. Warehouse management will understand how that translates into productivity. After all, Honeywell is no stranger to wearable scanner technology. There’s a 15-year foundation of proven wearable tech at work here.

Advanced Technology Leads The Way. Again.

The Honeywell 8675i Wearable Scanner is outfitted with two significant technology advances. Here’s a quick overview of each:

FlexRange™ technology

In the past, handheld and some ring scanners did a decent job reading codes of near and mid-range items. But faraway inventory, especially those in stacked bins and shelves, was problematic.
Now, with FlexRange™ technology, items near and far can be scanned quickly and precisely. Smooth, fast reading from near to far (30 ft. in the air) is now not only possible but everyday doable. The 8675i enables wearable scanning in applications and environments that would have previously required a handheld device.

Adaptus™ technology:

In short, this equips the scanner to perform in demanding conditions. How demanding? Let us count the ways: harsh, cold environments. Explosive conditions. And more.

The Perfect Fit in More Ways Than One.

Naturally, the 8675i Wearable Scanner fits the needs of warehouse operations today and tomorrow. The fit also extends to the workforce, leading to faster and more thorough adoption across the enterprise.

The scanner has a flexible wearing configuration with a fast, toolless changeover from ring to glove. The strap glove secures 8675i on the back of the hand for optimal dexterity, ergonomics, and user comfort.
Its durable material/design yields a long lifespan and it consists of non-absorbent materials for easy cleaning.

Both left and right-hand versions are compatible with bar hand or conventional glove for comfort and user safety. The unit is available in one size and is highly adjustable at index finger and wrist so each worker can perform at their best.

Valuable Upgrades, Accessories, and a Connected Workforce Await

The Honeywell 8675i is available with a full line of wearable accessories. There are also plenty of options available with multi-battery chargers, Cables and Power Supplies. The intelligent batter is easy to remove and replace which improves ROI and extends the device lifespan.

And as you’d expect from Honeywell, you can monitor and manage deployed devices via our Operational Intelligence system. In addition, support is yet one more reason to trust Honeywell as a full spectrum of Service and Maintenance options are available and scalable to your needs.

The Honeywell 8675i Wearable Scanner = Warehouse Performance Boost

The boost is tangible and measurable on multiple levels: worker productivity, efficiency gains, less downtime, and more.

The Benefits of Wearable Technology in Your Warehouse https://imprint-e.com/the-benefits-of-wearable-technology-in-your-warehouse/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-benefits-of-wearable-technology-in-your-warehouse https://imprint-e.com/the-benefits-of-wearable-technology-in-your-warehouse/#respond Wed, 13 May 2020 00:08:19 +0000 https://imprint-e.com/?p=293961

With e-commerce making the number of individualized orders go through the roof there is an increase in third-party warehousing. The days of larger shipments of product going to single retailers (via cases, pallets, or containers) are now in addition to an abundance of individual orders being shipped direct to customer. As such, there is more inventory being picked and shipped on a more personalized/individualized scale but in much higher volumes. There is no evidence to suggest that this e-commerce boom is just a trend or phase. In fact, it is to the contrary. This is the way into the future, and it will impact your warehouse

Your warehouses and workforce need to be well-equipped for the challenges this e-commerce age presents.

Wearable technology solutions are one giant step for your labor force and your warehouse in making them both more ready for the future of e-commerce and its impact on your operations and warehouse.

Wearable solutions are made to be worn by your workforce and support speed, efficiency, and repetitive motion all which boost the productivity of your warehouse.

DEFINING WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY

Wearable technology is worn on the body of a person and provides a hands-free picking solution. Wearable technology provides comfort alongside value because it frees up both hands allowing workers to use two when picking heavy or unwieldy items. Instead of trying to carry (or balance) both their hand terminal and the item itself; or having to scan or log the item and then find a place to rest or place their handheld device, they can create one streamlined process and motion by the wearable device being attached to their hand, wrist, or arm.

Now, your workforce can capture the information while not slowing down the actual physical process of picking the order.  The short of it is this: wearable technology allows workers to pick more orders, more accurately and more efficiently.

THE BENEFITS OF WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY

Consider the UPS or FedEx driver with a holstered scanner or handheld terminal. They scan the shipment upon delivery, but now they either must holster their scanner or find a place to put their handheld terminal before they can grab the delivery item. If the item is particularly heavy or awkward, they may be trying to juggle their device with the package itself which could lead to dropping one or both. Add to that the repetitive motion of scanning and then carrying packages and devices and you add to the physical ware-and-tear of your delivery personnel.

Consider how many deliveries that person makes in a day. This is a lot of inefficiency and repetitive motion built up over the course of an entire workday, which builds up over a week, etc. It’s not different for your warehouse worker who is up and down the lanes picking orders trying to juggle their handheld and mobile devices alongside picking and carrying inventory from point A to point B, trying to stay both efficient and accurate.

When workers free up their hands, they can complete more tasks and productivity increases. In freeing up both hands, you allow workers to use both hands to pick those heavy and unwieldly items. You improve their physical mobility while also increasing the mobility of the device itself. Wearable scanners reduce injury that is due to the repetitive motion that a gun-style scanner requires to operate. All in all, you end up with a more efficient operation (and increased longevity of your devices and your labor.)

GETTING STARTED WITH WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY

If you are looking to start developing your wearable technology solution, we recommend you begin with a wearable terminal and a ring scanner.  Zebra has the WT600 a wearable computer. The WT600 prioritizes comfort, coming in smaller and lighter than other computer wearables. It has a rugged design, ensuring maximum uptime in the toughest environments. Honeywell also offers terminals in similar form factor, such as their CT40 or CT60.

These are compatible with the last five Android generations and allow companies to test and validate applications once, accelerate enterprise-wide deployment, optimize device performance, and simplify maintenance. And keep your eyes on the future with wearable computers such as the HD4000 which is a head-mounted display. These are not yet commonly being used, but it is only a matter of time.

For ring scanners, there is Zebra’s RS5100 which represents the next generation of ring scanners. This ring scanner is practically weightless, has different trigger models, and is designed to fit onto the wearer’s fingers, across the back of their hand, or on a lanyard. It provides first-time capture of barcodes regardless of their condition. Alternative to the ring scanner there is a wearable scanner the ProGlove Mark 2. It comes in two convenient scanning ranges to fit your operational needs and connects to tablets, smart watches, or wearable terminals via Bluetooth, USB, and RS 232.

The future is upon us and there is no time like the present to make your workforce and warehouse ready.

You are already feeling the onslaught of order and fulfillment. It is time to equip your workforce, so they have the advantage of speed, efficiency, and lower physical stress from repetitive motion. You can increase your productivity, decrease your errors, and free up your workforces’ hands by getting started with your wearable technology solution. Contact us. We can get you suited up with wearable terminals and scanners and your workforce and warehouse a little more prepared for the future.

Save Time and Increase Productivity with a Ring Scanner https://imprint-e.com/save-time-and-increase-productivity-with-a-ring-scanner/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=save-time-and-increase-productivity-with-a-ring-scanner https://imprint-e.com/save-time-and-increase-productivity-with-a-ring-scanner/#respond Thu, 16 Apr 2020 12:32:59 +0000 https://imprint-e.com/?p=293754

Is your company still using a handheld scanner that is bulky and requires your employees to put everything down to use it?  How many times have those hand scanners been put down and then lost?  Or the employees fight over who gets to use it next?  Changing times call for a change in equipment.  Like a scanner that is small and allows a person to use their hands while scanning products!  Now there’s an idea.

A single finger ring scanner can save you time and money by processing inventory faster!

Have you considered replacing those big, bulky hand scanners with something that is lightweight and easy to use?  I finger ring scanner is all that and more!  It is versatile and has a detachable trigger assembly.

You can maximize productivity and process shipments and deliveries quicker with the Bluetooth technology.  It has a rugged design for a long lifecycle.  And with its enhanced imaging capturing system, it is great for any industry.

Improved Technology for Changing Times

With the new demands for faster replacements of products, it is important to be able to keep up with the changing demands.  More customers are placing online orders and have the capability to see what store has the products that they’re looking for.  Keeping up with the demand requires a scanner that streamlines your inventory processes for accurate reflections of what you have in stock.

A ring scanner can also let employees keep both hands available, scanning as they go.  And since it is always on hand, there is no worry about having to set everything down to pick it up.  Or the very real problem of losing the scanners and employees fighting over what is available.

Each finger scanner has a detachable trigger assembly to help minimize the spreading of viruses and germs from one person to another.  Each employee can get have their own trigger.  And they are easy to clean and sanitize.

Lightweight and Easy to Use

Each single finger scanner is light, weighing in at a mere 2.47 ounces.  They are 2.67 inches long, 1.10 inches wide, and 0.83 inches in diameter.  The single-sided trigger can be used on a left or right hand, on the back of the hand, or even attached to a lanyard.  There’s also an option for a double trigger for greater flexibility.

Maximize Productivity and Processing

Now you can have inventory processed faster, maximizing productivity for the on-demand shopping requirements.  The LEDs on the back of the scanner can also indicate which direction to go for warehouse inventory models: right, left, straight.  The scanner has options to give employees notice of a successful scan by an audible beep, a blink of the LED light, or a vibration.

The durability of the little scanner is rugged to enhance the longevity of the product, keeping it safe from drops, bumps, and even a high-pressure hosing.  It can also handle high levels of electrostatic discharge, so no worries about the buildup from walking on concrete floors.

Smart Technology

Installed with Bluetooth technology, each device can travel up to 100 feet from the host device.  The host device can be anything from a vehicle mounted computer, a hip device, a laptop, or even a mainframe for smaller facilities.  It has the option of having LED scanning or laser scanning.  Even the batteries are fast and easy to change out, with the option to get a battery that is better suited for cold environments.

The two scan engine options provide you the ability to select the best one for your needs.  Both have the ability to capture scans the first time regardless of the quality of the label.  1D/2D images are easily captures with the PRZM Intelligent Imaging, with a wide view area for large barcodes.
