As ecommerce picked up, speed and efficiency have become more important to correctly keep up with tasks. Wearable scanning technology has also proven it can increase efficiency in picking when both hands are needed for heavy and bulky items. If the devices are tethered there is no independent power supply, and the cable can get in the way or get twisted up and cause problems.

Eliminate Errors with Automatic Data Capture: Imprint Enterprises

Wearable barcoding solutions are optimal for scanning and picking in several industries, including manufacturing, warehouse, distribution, transportation and logistics, and retail. A total wearable solution enhances productivity and efficiency with faster scanning, faster picking, and faster transactions with less repetitive injuries.

Wearable tech can help productivity in many areas of your facility, including:

    • Manufacturing
        • Inventory management
        • Line-side replenishment
        • Parts tracking
    • Warehouse / Distribution / Transportation and Logistics
        • Receiving, picking, packing

Automotive Industry Use Case

Automotive assembly line

Incorporating a total wearable scanning solution can provide valuable savings that add up quickly. An automotive plant can build upwards of 1,000 vehicles a day, with each vehicle requiring approximately 1,000 scans. Every second saved per scan can equal a total savings of 1,000,000 seconds per day, coming out to roughly 12 working days in one business day.

Wearable solutions can also help employees by minimizing the steps to scan and move items. For example, an employee needs to scan a 20-pound brake rotor. Using a scanner terminal, the employee picks up the scanner, scans the item, puts the scanner down, picks the item up, and places it onto a cart or pallet. A ring scanner eliminates the need to pick up and put down the scanner terminal.

Omnichannel Warehouse Use Case

In an omnichannel warehouse, many products can be coming and going. Having to pick up and put down a scanner terminal to pick and stock items can be time-consuming. Using wearable technology, employees can point, scan, and pick items more quickly and efficiently.

Another example is in receiving. Items coming in can be in large boxes on pallets that may need to go to several locations. A quick, hands-free scan and a glance at the host mobile computer on the wrist can have employees moving items without having to pick up and put down other equipment, saving time and energy.

Man scanning a pallet of items

Consumer Products Use Case

From the front of a store to the back, wearable technology is great for consumer product businesses. Backroom complexities can be lowered using all-in-one swappable batteries. One consumer products company went from only using handheld terminals to a completely wearable solution due to the increase in ecommerce and on-demand ordering.

Picking efficiency and productivity improved 15% by removing the unnecessary steps of picking up and putting down scanner terminals. Orders were easily seen and verified on wearable mobile host computer, with the ring scanners leaving hands available for picking items.

Some wearable mobile host computers can incorporate voice picking, where verbal commands are provided through a headset, directing employees to the specific products, which can also reduce employee training time.

Service Management Maximizes Your Time and Productivity

Some businesses hesitate in upgrading wearable barcode technologies due to the time-consuming work of porting. Imprint Enterprises, a Premiere Solution Partner with Zebra Technologies, can do all the work for you, freeing up valuable time and energy. The setup, application loading, and software management can all be completed by the experts for you.

Scanners and mobile computers can be bulky, are sometimes tethered to host devices, and require the use of one or both hands to use, requiring employees to put down the devices to fill orders and sort/load products. If the devices are tethered there is no independent power supply, and the cable can get in the way or get twisted up and cause problems. Do you know how that impacts productivity and efficiency?

Randomly buying new barcoding scanning and mobile computer technology doesn’t inherently increase productivity and efficiency.

The key is in obtaining the correct combination of wearable barcoding solutions available from Zebra Technologies that provides greater flexibility for improved mobility and productivity.

Why Use Wearable Barcode Technology?

Checking the freezer with a thermometer

Wearable technology is optimal for many industries and can decrease unnecessary errors by up to 39%. Having been around for about 12-15 years, wearable tech started out tethered to help employees manage items that are bulky and heavy without having to pick up and put down barcode scanning devices.

As ecommerce picked up, speed and efficiency became more important to keep up with tasks. Wearable scanners have proven how they increased efficiency in picking when both hands are needed for heavy and bulky items. Why stop there? Micro-efficiencies that were previously dismissed can save time from the extra motions of picking up and putting down a mobile computer, or having to search for where it was last placed.

Benefits of Using a Wearable Barcode Scanning Solution

The rise of ecommerce created the need for more efficient wearable barcode scanning options that could keep up with the demands on businesses while not burdening employees with multiple devices and cords. Wearable barcode solutions provide the ability to safely move heavy and bulky items and quickly perform scanning and picking by keeping both hands free. Gone are the days of having to constantly pick up and put down scanning devices.

manufacturing production line scanning bar codes

Increasing Productivity

Micro-efficiencies save businesses money by saving employees time while performing work, increasing productivity. With wearable devices, fewer scanners and mobile computers are misplaced. Thousands of parts can be scanned per day on an assembly line easily and comfortably.

The ergonomic comfort, improved ruggedness, and advancements of software make wearable technology a more efficient alternative to standard handheld devices. Wearable devices are smaller and lighter with technological advancements, making them weigh less than conventional scanner terminals.

Mobile computers with independent hosts provide fast and reliable data without delay. This can decrease unnecessary errors by up to 39%. Fewer errors equal greater productivity and overall profits. And with having fast access to data, any errors found while scanning can be easily adjusted on the spot.

Wearable barcode technology has been around since around 2010. Wearable barcode technology was originally created to provide a hands-free option for heavy and bulky lifting. The concept helped to improve work efficiencies while lowering the repetitive motions of picking up and putting down handheld scanners.

Delivery driver using a Zebra tc5x

A laser-based ring scanner was tethered to a terminal due to the inability to power such a small device for a workable duration. Scanning was the sole purpose of the ring scanner, so if other information had to be reviewed or data needed input on the spot, everything had to pause to do so.

As technology has improved, so has the capabilities of wearable barcode device technology. Gone are the days of being tethered to a terminal. Wearable devices have also improved from being bulky and incapable of holding power to being ergonomic, Wi-Fi capable, and battery powered.

Moving into the Future of Wearable Technology

Checking the freezer with a thermometer

As technology has improved, so has the weight and bulk of barcode devices. Employees are more productive when wearable devices are light and ergonomic, yet accessible. Improved ruggedness means the devices can withstand typical wear and tear for scanning and picking in many industries, including manufacturing and warehouses.

Ergonomic comfort, improved ruggedness, and advancements of software make wearable technology a more efficient alternate to standard handheld devices. Match a ring scanner with a wearable host/terminal. The wearable WT6300 host computer even has the option for a tactile snap on keypad for easy data entry at your employees’ fingertips.

Why Use Wearable Barcode Technology?

Technology and the Food Supply Chain: Results from Zebra Tech’s Food Safety Supply Chain Vision Study https://imprint-e.com/technology-and-the-food-supply-chain-results-from-zebra-techs-food-safety-supply-chain-vision-study/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=technology-and-the-food-supply-chain-results-from-zebra-techs-food-safety-supply-chain-vision-study https://imprint-e.com/technology-and-the-food-supply-chain-results-from-zebra-techs-food-safety-supply-chain-vision-study/#respond Tue, 14 Mar 2023 20:48:35 +0000 https://imprint-e.com/?p=300950

The Zebra Vision Study Report on technology and the food supply chain surveys the impact of safety, traceability, and transparency across the world. Consumer concerns over food borne illnesses and allergies have been a continuously growing concern, possibly more so since the pandemic.

The study highlights global views of consumers and food and beverage industry decision-makers. The study shows the challenges businesses face on information throughout the supply chain. Consumers want to know about the source, quality, and safety of their foods. Consumers do not feel they are sufficiently informed.

COVID-19 may have since impacted this study by increasing consumer concerns on traceability and transparency. Curbside and e-commerce deliveries add to the pressures of businesses.

Zebra Technologies has the solutions your business needs to ease consumer concerns while optimizing resilience.

Consumer Faith in Food Safety is Low

Chef plating a salad with meat

Consumer demand for unlimited choice, fast availability, and lower prices are increasing. This can impact your profit margins while generating pressure to maximize production. In some cases, it can cause manufacturing systems to exceed their limits. Food safety can quickly become compromised.

If consumers had the same access to information that decision-makers of the food and beverage industry have, they might have more trust in the processes. As it is, consumers’ top five food safety concerns are:

      1. Restaurant kitchen staff hygiene
      2. Foodborne outbreaks
      3. Illness from contaminated food
      4. Food and beverage recalls
      5. Restaurant wait staff hygiene

By the Numbers

In the survey, 15 countries were represented in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. 4,957 consumers responded to the survey, aged 18 and up. 462 industry executives representing food and beverage industry decision-makers responded to the survey. The survey covered manufacturing, transportation and logistics, wholesale/distribution, and retail.

RFID Software on a computer

80% of consumers surveyed had little to no trust in companies and brands to ensure food safety, compared to 63% of decision-makers who did not. When consumers lose trust in a company, it can drastically impact that company’s ability to generate profits.

69% of the industry decision-makers believed the industry can manage food traceability and transparency, compared to only 35% of consumers that agreed. This statistic shows the growing discrepancy between what information consumers have access to and what the decision-makers have access to.

Business Consequences of Food Safety

There are several consequences of food safety incidents that can negatively impact a business. First off, a business’s finances can be impacted by recalls and stopped productions. Their reputation can be damaged, discouraging consumers from future purchases. The internet and social media are quick to spread bad publicity.

Legal and regulatory factors can tie up a business in processes that affect long-term operations with potential economic and practical consequences. Partners of a business affected by food safety issues may end their association to protect their own image.

Benefits of Using Technology

The impacts of food safety incidents can be seen immediately or can take a long time to resolve. Technology can be used to mitigate the challenges while boosting consumer confidence. It can identify gaps in food supply chain monitoring and highlight them as areas for improvements for you.

Updated technology can identify regulation requirements, helping to ensure you meet them before it’s too late. Providing greater information to flow improves visibility and transparency, while also improving traceability using a comprehensive log throughout the supply chain.

Using technology throughout the supply chain provides the information and confidence the consumers want. If you are in the 93% of industry decision-makers that plan to increase investments in food monitoring tools within the next year, why not get the best in the industry?

Zebra Tech that can Increase Transparency & Safety

RFID is the leading technological innovation that can improve food traceability within the supply chain, yet only 31% of businesses surveyed have not yet incorporated them. This can provide a unique opportunity to get a distinct advantage in the industry over competition. Zebra Technologies is the leading provider of RFID equipment.

Rugged handheld mobile computers with scanners, mobile barcode labels and thermal printers, and rugged scanners have been identified as the top three most popular technologies to improve traceability. Zebra Technologies has options that can match your needs, ranging from good, better, to best.

Temperature monitoring and sensing technology is expected to play a crucial role in the industry in the coming years. Products that are damaged or destroyed by temperature and humidity fluctuations can be easily tracked. Zebra Technologies merged with Temptime® technology, providing the industries best labels, cards, and sensors.

Get Ahead of the Competition Today

82% of consumers say the food and beverage industry has an ethical responsibility to ensure food safety. Ease consumer fears of foodborne illness and disease by integrating technology. Why wait on another public health crisis or some other market disruption? Close the trust gap and improve traceability and transparency.

Zebra Technologies is an award-winning company that knows and understands barcoding technology. Originally founded in 1969, Zebra now has 10’s of millions of devices worldwide, creating end-to-end solutions. Want to read the full report? You can get it by following this link.

Incorporating barcode technology into your small to medium sized consumer goods business is a move for your future success. Success is in the details, and those details include accuracy and productivity to meet your customer’s demands while adhering to safety and health compliance standards.

Mobile Terminals and Computers: Imprint Enterprises

Over the past few decades, technology has continually advanced. Moving into the future and growing your business includes embracing this advancing technology. Zebra Technologies and Imprint Enterprises have the tools, knowledge, and expertise to help you move forward with the future of barcode technology, starting with printing barcodes at your facility.

A proper barcode label helps you and your clients ensure compliance standards and mandates are met. A barcode label provides information on what a product is and where it goes.

Labels are used to track inventory, which is vital to supply chains, inventory management, transportation, asset management, sales, and more.

What’s Important to Know About Printing

ZT410

When printing your own barcode labels, there are certain factors to consider. Printing requirements involve determining the parameters of your barcode printer setup:

      • How big of a label do you need to print?
      • How many labels do you want or need to print at any one time?
      • Will the labels be printed in a centralized method or a distributed method?
      • How many work areas will need printer capabilities, or will there be one printer room?
      • Does my company need to incorporate RFID printing capabilities?
      • Are there mandates my company must comply with?

Font Size Matters

Once you know how your company will be printing labels, the next factors to consider involve the font size on the labels and the size of the barcode itself. The smaller the font size, the higher the resolution the printhead of the barcode printer needs to be. Printheads come in 203, 300, or 600 DPI (dots per inch). The smaller a label needs to be, the higher the DPI resolution must be to accommodate the size of the label.

Compliance Matters

While you’re growing your business and building your clientele list, it’s important to know if there are specific barcode label industry compliance standards that your consumer goods company must adhere to. If labels are not done to specific standards, your company can be liable for more than just fines and chargebacks, there is a possibility of a legal exposure as well.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires using a unique device identifier (UDI) on barcode labels in food, beverage, and medical fields. The United States, European Union, China, and Brazil have specific serialization requirements for pharmaceuticals, with more countries joining to include this requirement. The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) created industry standards to improve efficiency and accuracy. ANSI and ISO are barcode label grading systems based on a letter or a numerical score.

The Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) enacted in 2013 requires the use of 2D barcodes on pharmaceuticals throughout the U.S. supply chain by 2023. The FDA requires the 2D barcodes to enhance consumer protection by monitoring the movement of prescription drugs from manufacturing to dispensation. 2D barcodes must contain the National Drug Code, Serial Number, Lot Number, and Expiration date. This level of traceability improves recall capabilities and authentic validation of pharmaceutical products.

Compliance with mandates can also affect your businesses growth. Large retail chains such as Wal-Mart, Target, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and more have been requiring consumer goods to incorporate RFID technology into their products. RFID can provide a more automated, hands-off approach, reducing the amount of physical touch or individual scanning of items. There are many benefits to including RFID, including improved inventory accuracy, tracking, and loss prevention.

These standards play key roles in identifying, tracking, and tracing products as they move through supply chains across the world. Whether it is a simple traceability requirement or a complex regulatory compliance code, incorporating barcode technology can help your consumer goods company minimize fines and exposure.

A Printer for Any Function

Barcode printers typically come in three varieties: desktop, tabletop, and mobile. Desktop printers are typically smaller and lighter than tabletop printers. Tabletop printers are more durable and can do more functions than a desktop, such as label rewinding and peel and present. If your company needs to print a thousand labels at a time and rewind them back into a roll (label rewinding), then a tabletop printer is the way to go.

Peel and present label printing is a method of sending a label job of, for example, a thousand labels to a printer where the job sits in a queue so that one label can be printed at a time, peeled off, and applied. Then it repeats until the queue is emptied.

Another option is using a mobile barcode label printer that can print barcodes as employees are walking around working. This is a good option for mobile workflows to minimize interruptions of walking back and forth to a centralized printing location.
